Reds and blues. I love my primary colours.

We made these triplet rings using spinels, zircon, and silver - all sourced from our neighbors Myanmar and Cambodia.

There are still a few left, so I thought I'd better photograph them before they're sold out.

Pretty, aren't they?

A pink spinel I got from Myanmar. It has a network of intriguing inclusions and colour bands that lend it a slightly orange hue. It's certainly nowhere near a padparadscha, but it has the necessary colour elements.

That's why I got it.
Not every gem needs to be flawless. The ones that really speak to you never are.

It's a sparkly sort of week, with the Sun blazing overhead, so here are some moonstones that will appreciate a little light shone upon them.

The blue effect that you see is known as adularescence (sometimes called schiller or shiller), and produces an illusion that the light is 'floating' on the stone.

Welcome to the Month of Aquamarine!

As we #March forward in 2019, we are noticing a greater prominence of jewellery involving this member of the beryl family (which includes morganite, heliodor, and the famous emerald). This is a picture of different grades of aquamarine. Some are cloudy, which make them lower in value. The ones that happen to be clear have visible inclusions in them, making them unsuitable for faceting as well. Thus, they have all been cut into cabochons instead.

What makes this lot hold value is its colour. This is close to what is called 'Santa Maria' colour, and thus brings a higher price tag.

These sapphire ear studs were made for a friend to replace his wife's missing pair.

What I love about this gem is the sheer variety of colours of comes in - the primary colours - reds, greens, blues, and every colour in between.

Managed to get hold of these in-matrix tourmaline specimens, so I thought I'd photograph them. Here they are.

Sapphires are some of my favourite gems. Though I particularly like the blues, sapphires come in every colour of the visible light spectrum, except red - in which case, they are called rubies.

August is once again here. Time to celebrate one of my favourite gems - the once-humble Spinel, now propelled into world-wide fame, so much so that it was newly added as a birthstone for this month, alongside Peridot and, in some lists, Sardonyx.

These Burmese spinels came from a very old lot that I got from a dealer on one of my travels. They are diamond-cut and, as a result, though relatively small, very difficult to find.

I'm glad to be able to show them to you. The new shooting setup works a treat.

A trio of rubies to celebrate the month of July!

Many have heard of the pigeon-blood red rubies from the legendary mines of Myanmar. Their rarity and fame have made them inaccessibly expensive to all but the most affluent, so much so that owning one is now one of the most prestigious status symbols possible.

We are privileged to be in contact with a couple of specialists in Burmese ruby and look forward to working even more closely with them.

Emerald - the birthstone of May.

The earliest emeralds, said to come from Egypt, were found in the jewellery of royalty, mainly because they were so rare that no one else could afford them.

When the mines in South America were discovered, emerald production boomed. As the Spanish brought boatloads of the verdant gems back to Europe, the oversupply caused a sharp drop in emerald prices.

Today, good quality emeralds are also coming out of Zambia and the Afghan-Pakistani region, with the latest new find in Ethiopia causing quite a stir in the gem world.

These vibrant, richly-coloured emeralds you see come from Swat in Pakistan.
